THE MAGIC FLUTE by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Mozart’s profound and whimsical final opera, a lighthearted tale of romantic love, spiritual transcendence and the beguiling art of bird-catching, returns in a vivid new production.

Endlessly inventive, charmingly fantastical and utterly unique, Mozart’s final and most beloved masterpiece is a playful but profound look at man’s search for love and his struggle to attain wisdom and virtue.

The internationally acclaimed ensemble cast is led by Rory Macdonald, and exciting young conductor with “a superb natural physical talent” (MusicalCriticism.com), and includes lyric tenor Alek Shrader, a “stylish, vivid” Mozartian (The New York Times); Heidi Strober, a soprano with “rare vivacity of voice and personality” (Houston Chronicle); Nathan Gunn, “a singer with unmistakable star power” (Opera News); Kristinn Sigmundsson, lauded for his performance in San Francisco Opera’s Der Rosenkavalier (2007); and, in the opera’s most virtuoso role, Russian soprano Albina Shagimuratova, who is “a phenomenon that must be heard to be believed” singing with “a rich and vibrant sound no matter how high the pitch” (Opera News).

In an imaginative new production by visual artist Jun Kaneko and sung in English, The Magic Flute is perfect for the whole family.

The Cult of Beauty: The Victorian Avant-Garde 1860–1900

February 18, 2012 – June 17, 2012

The Cult of Beauty: The Victorian Avant-Garde 1860–1900 is the first major exhibition to explore the unconventional creativity of the British Aesthetic Movement, tracing the evolution of this movement from a small circle of progressive artists and poets, through the achievements of innovative painters and architects, to its broad impact on fashion and the middle-class home. The superb artworks on view encompass the manifold forms of Victorian material culture: the traditional high art of painting, fashionable trends in architecture and interior decoration, handmade and manufactured furnishings for the “artistic” home, art photography, and the new modes of dress.

The Cult of Beauty showcases the entirety of the Aesthetic Movement’s output, celebrating the startling beauty and variety of creations by masters as diverse as artists Dante Gabriel Rossetti, James McNeill Whistler, and Edward Burne-Jones and designers E.W. Godwin, William Morris, and Christopher Dresser. The Legion of Honor is the only U.S. venue on the world tour, which includes the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
